The Cincinnati Men’s Lacrosse team traveled to Lexington to play the Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday February 23rd in a cold and hard fought game in which the Bearcats emerged with a 6-5 victory. The Bearcats had not beaten the Wildcats in over two years and with the victory are now 1-0 in league play to start their season.
The game started off with Kentucky taking an early 2-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. The bearcats shook off the rust from the van-ride up to the game in the second quarter and scored 4 goals while holding the Wildcats scoreless. The third quarter was marked by a strong defensive effort to stop a flurry of shots by the Kentucky offense which resulted in only one goal. The Bearcats offense did not possess the ball for very long and at the end of the quarter Cincinnati was hanging on to a 4-3 lead. The scoring resumed in the forth quarter that witnessed 4 goals and a last minute victory. With under a minute to play and the score tied at 5-5 Danny Macaully got open and found the back of the net to give the Bearcats a 6-5 victory.
Strong defensive efforts were turned in by defenseman Paul McKay and John Paino who helped goalie Kyle O’Neal frustrate the Wildcat shooters all game long. The Bearcats goals were scored by Ray Harper, Grant Maddox, Tony Piloto, Danny Macaully, and Bobby Nagel who had two. The Bearcats next game will be at Nippert Stadium against the Ohio State Buckeyes against whom the bearcats have not registered a win in over 3 years.
